Lekkasje av plastpellets - Handelens Miljøfond kjøper ryddeutstyr

Den 17. mars ble det funnet store mengder plastpellets som var drevet i land på strender i Fredrikstad, som senere også er funnet i Moss, Råde, Hvaler, Larvik og Horten. Handelens Miljøfond har snudd seg kjapt rundt og kjøpt tekniske ryddeapparater til Oslofjorden Friluftsråd for å få ryddet vekk det alvorlige plastutslippet.

Plastic pellets are the raw material used to produce plastic products. The pellets have a diameter of 2-3 millimeters and fall under the size category for microplastics. On March 17, large quantities of plastic pellets were found on beaches and in coves along the outer Oslofjord. The spill likely originates from a ship transporting plastic pellets to or from a production facility.

The tiny plastic beads are very difficult and time-consuming to clean up, and they are harmful to both seabirds and marine life as the plastic is mistaken for food. When the Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund learned of this, the decision to help was simple and swift.

- It is terrible that such spills and accidents still occur. This has been a problem for decades, and we are still struggling to clean up old pellets from the beaches to this day. The Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund has the resources and is pleased to contribute to a swift cleanup, yet the plastics industry and the police must ensure that this type of spill ends, says Rasmus Hansson, CEO of the Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund.

The Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund has now provided 150,000 NOK to the Oslofjord Outdoor Council in collaboration with Marin Omsorg, and contributed to the purchase of technical cleaning devices to clear the spill. Twelve leaf blowers, two wet vacuums, and various other equipment have been purchased. Leaf blowers have become an effective cleanup tool for clearing plastic pellets from the worst areas. The equipment is now distributed to the Archipelago Service and other actors in the outer Oslofjord for personal use and lending to volunteers who wish to contribute. All cleanup must consider the coronavirus situation, but with effective equipment, more individuals can easily clear significant amounts of plastic pellets.

Chemical analysis to assist police

The spill is under preliminary investigation by the police. The Norwegian Retailers' Environment Fund has also initiated the development of a chemical analysis, which will be performed by Norner AS, to assist the police in determining the source of the spill. Plastpellets er råmaterialet som brukes til å produsere plastprodukter. Pelletene har en diameter på 2-3 millimeter og faller inn under størrelseskategorien for mikroplast. Den 17. mars ble det funnet mengder med plastpellets på strendene og i viker langs ytre Oslofjord. Utslippet stammer sannsynligvis fra et skip med frakt av plastpellets til eller fra et produksjonsanlegg.

De bittesmå plastkulene er svært vanskelig og tidkrevende å rydde, og er skadelig både for sjøfugl og livet i havet da plasten mistolkes som mat. Da Handelens Miljøfond fikk vite dette, var avgjørelsen om å hjelpe til enkel og rask.

- Det er forferdelig at slike utslipp og uhell fortsatt skjer. Dette har vært et problem i mange tiår, og vi sliter fortsatt med å få ryddet vekk gammel pellets fra strendene den dag i dag. Handelens Miljøfond har midlene og er glad for å kunne bidra til en kjapp opprydding, samtidig må plastindustrien og politiet sørge for at denne typen søl tar slutt, sier Rasmus Hansson, daglig leder i Handelens Miljøfond

Handelens Miljøfond har nå gitt 150 000 kr til Oslofjordens Friluftsråd i samarbeid med Marin Omsorg, og bidratt til å kjøpe tekniske ryddeapparater til å rydde bort utslippet. Det er kjøpt inn 12 løvsugere, 2 våtsugere samt diverse annet utstyr. Løvsugere har blitt et effektivt ryddeverktøy for å få ryddet opp plastpellets på de verste plassene. Utstyret er nå fordelt rundt til Skjærgårdstjenesten og andre aktører i ytre Oslofjord til eget bruk og utlån til frivillige som ønsker å bidra. All rydding må ta hensyn til koronasituasjonen, men med effektivt utstyr kan flere enkeltpersoner få ryddet betydelige mengder med plastpellets.

Kjemisk analyse skal bistå politiet

Utslippet er under innledende etterforskning av politiet. Handelens Miljøfond har også tatt initiativ til utarbeidelse av en kjemisk analyse, som skal utføres av Norner AS, for å bistå politiet i arbeidet med å finne ut hvor dette utslippet kommer fra.
